Dr. Ikeadi Maurice Ndukwu, age 62 of Chesterton, IN, passed away suddenly on May 29, 2020.  He was born on March 21, 1958 in River State, Nigeria, to Dr. Maurice D. Ndukwu, who preceded him in death and Ethel Ndukwu, who survives.

On October 12, 1991 in Brooklyn, NY, he married the love of his life, Denise Ndukwu, who survives in Chesterton.

He is survived by his wife and three loving children Anulé Joy Ndukwu, Ikeadi Ndukwu, and Chima Ndukwu; his sister Felicia Ndukwu; his brother and sister-in-law Azuwuike and Krystal Ndukwu; his adoring nephews Gregory Ohadoma, Azuwuike Ndukwu, and  Ikechi Ndukwu; and his adoring nieces Keierra Ndukwu and her mother Marissa LaFoucade, and Gabriella Ndukwu and her mother Maria Angulo, nephew Roberto Barbier, and niece Erica Eastmond. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Violet Harper; his sisters-in-laws Renée Harper (husband Joseph) and Dr. Cheryl Eastmond, (husband Condell), his many aunts, cousins, and friends; and a host of relatives in Nigeria.

Maurice was also preceded in death by his brothers, John Ndukwu and Chima Ndukwu; and by his beloved grandmother, Agnes Onyerecha Nwanna.

Maurice served as a medical doctor for over 30 years, specializing in pulmonary and critical care and sleep medicine. After training and teaching at the Univ. of Chicago Hospitals, he came to Michigan City in 2000 to begin work at The Medical Group. He worked at Porter, St. Anthony, and La Porte Hospitals in the critical care units. Since founding a private practice in Michigan City with his best friend, Dr. Minesh Patel in 2007, Maurice has spent every day advocating and caring for the health of his community.  He was a consummate professional and passionate about the latest treatments in pulmonary disease.

Maurice was a star athlete at New Milford high school in Connecticut and lettered in wrestling, track & field, and soccer. He was an active Boy Scout during his childhood and later transitioned into the fatherly scout role when his sons joined Boy Scout Troop 908. He realized his dream of hiking Philmont in 2011 with his nephew Ikechi, his oldest son, Ikeadi, and his troop.  Above all, he was hardworking, ethical, moral, spiritual, a faithful, loving husband and father, and will be fondly remembered as an honest and sincere friend. Throughout his career and life Maurice continued to retain a sense of humor and humility that endeared him to patients, colleagues, and friends alike.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Maurice would have wanted the family and community to continue staying healthy and practice social distancing. For the safety of the family and the community at large, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date when it is deemed safe to congregate.

Professional arrangements are entrusted to the White-Love Funeral Home, Chesterton, IN. Memories may be shared at: www.whitelovefuneralhome.com or sent to the family at:

I wish to express my sympathies to the entire Ndukwu family. I started with doc when he first came to Michigan City in his first sleep lab. As a Respiratory Therapist he and I had many adventures together over the last 20yrs! He was truly one in a million, and I consider myself blessed to have worked with such a wonderful person! He was not however, as funny as he thought he was! 😄 RIP DOC!

Denise and family,
I was extremely saddened by the news. Dr. Ndukwu meant so much to this community and to me, personally. From the time you came to Michigan City, Dr. showed compassion to all and a desire to improve healthcare in our area. He encouraged me to further my career and to help him in starting the Sleep Lab. I recall having brunch with you and the children when they were young; he was so proud of them. He will truly be missed, and I pray for God’s peace and comfort as you deal with his loss.

Dr. Ndukwu saved my father's life. Although Dad ended up with a terminal condition not related to his lungs, Dr. Ndukwu gave Dad and me one more wonderful year together. I have always remembered him for that and am deeply indebted to his expertise. He gave me the best year of my life.

Dear Mrs. Ndukwu and family:

Sending my deepest condolences to you all. I am shocked and saddened to learn of Dr. Ndukwu's sudden passing. He was a towering presence in my life when we lived in NW Indiana (we moved to Ohio a few years ago). He literally saved my life by refusing to give up the search to find the infection that was plaguing my lungs for 15 or 20 years. When he found what it was, the treatment he prescribed was like a miracle cure. I will never forget his relentless determination, nor his compassion. My he rest in peace.

My heart is broken at the passing of my "Sleep" doctor. I was out of town and state and just learned today of this sad news. I express my deepest condolences to the entire family of Dr. Ndukwu. He was truly an amazing doctor and person. He was so passionate about his work, so humble in his demeanor, and so caring as a person. I will always remember that my last visit to his office went beyond the professional level to that of a very personal and caring professional who also took interest in my own personal life. My prayers are with you all. - "Rev. Jack" (the name which Dr. Ndukwu most always called me)

I am very sorry to hear of Maurice's passing. I grew up for a short time in New Milford with him, and he was always very kind and friendly. I am not surprised he became a doctor, as he was always very smart. Rest in Peace.

My condolences to the Ndukwu family. Maurice was certainly one of the good guys. I went to high school in CT with Maurice and considered him a good friend. He was easily the most mature and thoughtful person I knew in the entire school. He was an excellent athlete and at the same time very gentle. He never had a bad word to say about anyone. I am sure his humanity, compassion and optimism will live on in his family and friends. We are all very lucky to have known Maurice, and need to keep his inspiration going, especially now. Best wishes to the family.
