Mary Gregor Lee, age 94, of Chesterton, Indiana, passed away on March 19, 2019 after a long and fulfilling life.

Mary is survived by her daughters Mary Patricia Hayes of Chicago, IL, Nanette Estes (Larry) of Anniston, Alabama, and her son Robert “Bob” (Francine) of Grayslake, IL.  She is also survived by her brother Cory Gregor (Kathy) of Miller, Indiana. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Also near and dear were nephew, Tom Lee, and niece, Maryann Kirk, who still reside nearby.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Robert “Bob”, and daughters Barbara and Wendy; brothers Bobby and Jimmy; sisters Angeline, Ruth and twin sister, Helen.

Mary was born in Gary, Indiana to first generation Czech immigrants, Angeline Krcmar and Vaclav Gregor, who settled in Gary due to work at the steel mill.  It was at US Steel where Mary met her future husband, Bob, and married in 1945 just weeks after the end of WW II.  Mary and Bob settled in Chesterton in the early 1950’s where she raised her family and became involved in St. Patrick Church including many years as a Eucharistic Minister.  She had a long career at Chesterton Rural Savings & Loan followed by working at Carson, Pirie, Scott.

She sent her kids to St. Patrick’s Catholic School in the ‘50s and ‘60s back when almost all teachers were nuns and discipline was often administered with a ruler (ask her son, Bob, for details). In 1977, she and her husband travelled to Czechoslovakia for that once-in-a-lifetime trip to visit remaining relatives in Prague. Mary will be missed by the many people whom have been a part of her life.
