Zachary Malham Obituary

Zachary Steven Malham

May 1, 1952 - November 25, 2023

Zachary S. Malham, 71, passed away in Bloomington, Indiana on November 25, 2023.

Zack was born in Gary, Indiana to Howell and Martha Karas Malham (both deceased) and was raised in Gary and then Merrillville.  He attended Andrean High School in Merrillville and Barrington High School in Barrington, Illinois and established friendships in both that would endure his entire life.

In Bloomington, Indiana, Zack discovered his culinary vocation as a chef and met Donna Gourley Malham who would become his lifelong love, soulmate and partner in exploration and adventure since their marriage in 1977.

The world was Zack’s university, as he received a doctorate in almost every passion in which he indulged.  After moving to Denver, Colorado in 1978, Zack and Donna both pursued careers in the Hospitality industry, first with Gilbert-Robinson’s legendary Houlihan’s and later Zack became an executive chef in the same and then with Hardrock Café (Denver).

When not working, Zack pursued his nationally recognized passions for painting and photography and one of the images he personally captured was hand-picked by Denver Art Museum for inclusion in an exhibition of works by the great Ansel Adams.  Zack had an encyclopedic knowledge of a variety range of topics, from his native Assyrian and Cretan archaeology to Egyptian and pre-Columbian art as well as his love of the West and First Nation cultures and art.

Zack and Donna shared a passion for travel and would undertake explorations of the Southwest to visit with Pueblo potters and Navajo weavers. He also photographed Pueblos and abandoned drive-ins which he developed into photo series.  For years they were part of a group of historical reenactment groups of Mountain Men & Women who would “Rendezvous” with buckskin and black powder rifles in the Rocky Mountains.  His library was vast, his wisdom profound and his thirst for knowledge unquenchable.

Zack is survived by his wife Donna. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Mary, known in religion as Sr. Mary Ruth, M.C. and survived by sister Leslie (David) Perlman and brothers Mark (Gina), Chris (Natalie), Joseph and Howell Jr (Cheryl).

He treasured his friendship with Donna’s family, including her parents Donald (deceased) and Clarice Gourley and her siblings Tom, Sue (Vince) Pinelli and Tim as well as many Gourley/Pinelli children and grandchildren.

A private interment for Zack’s family was held in Chesterton, Indiana on December 1st.  His "Celebration of Life" is tentatively scheduled for early 2024.
