William Skalku Obituary

       William A. Skalku passed away August 27, 2021. Bill was born August 3, 1938 in Gary, IN to Hazel Balash and Andrew Skalku. He graduated from Emerson High School and spent one year at Valparaiso University before going into the Air Force, where he met and married Sharon Hillis, his wife of 60 years. 

       He graduated from Purdue with three engineering degrees.  Bill retired from U.S. Steel in 1999.

        Bill was a man of many interests.  He had his private piolets license and was a member of the original 

Michigan City Aviators. 

       He loved fishing and tied his own flies for trout fishing.  He was into photography and loved taking pictures of his grandson.

       Bill was a member of the Valparaiso Gun Club.  As a young man, he shot in matches.  His biggest love was for his son, Randy, and grandson, Andrew, who was his bike riding buddy.

       Bill was preceded in death by his mother, his father, and his son, Randal L. Skalku.

       He leaves behind his wife, Sharon; his grandson, Andrew; his sister, Beverly Sullivan; his niece, Kim (Steve) Stacker; his nephews: Scott (Shannon) Mizerack, Jeff (Tammy) Hillis, Doug (Shelly) Hillis, Mike (Sally) Hillis; his sister-in-law, Carol Hillis; and Bob Sabinske, a friend who was always there for Bill.

       A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 2050 W 1100 N, Chesterton, IN with Pastor Ruth Popkin officiating. 

       Memorial donations in honor of Bill may be given to Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
