William Meyer Obituary

William Wayne Meyer passed away peacefully at home on July 17 at the age of 91. He was born in Chicago on May 19, 1929 to Forest and Elizabeth (Fedosky) Meyer. At age 16 the family moved to Meadowbrook Road and with the exception of a few years he spent the rest of his life there. On June 13, 1953 he married Frances Sturgeon who preceded him in death in 2005. He is survived by his sister Elizabeth Fitch and his children; Catherine Meyer, Susan (Alan) Baughman, Christine Himes, William (Cheryl) Meyer, Lynda (Dave) Johnson, Laura (Wiley) Bailey, and Robert (Heidi) Meyer. Daughter Martha Ann Meyer preceded him in death in 1968. He also is survived by 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Bill was a graduate of Chesterton High School, class of 1947, and Purdue University. He worked for many years as an electrical engineer. In his retirement, he volunteered for the Westchester Neighbors Food Pantry, Westchester Township History Museum, and the Visiting Nurses Association of Northwest Indiana.

Bill and Fran met at the Indiana Dunes State Park where she was working one summer and the dunes were always a special place for him and his family. There were many family hikes and evenings at the beach. He enjoyed local history, having researched and written many articles about local topics. He was an avid skier, and he and Fran enjoyed traveling to ski resorts throughout the country and Europe.

His intelligence and mechanical skills were appreciated by his family. He built the family home and garage, and he kept bikes, cars, and the house well-maintained. Bill had a dry sense of humor, which could confuse those who did not know him well. He appreciated puns, logic, and the sciences, and hosted annual Pi Day celebrations. Although an introvert, he enjoyed meeting with the “Boys from the Harbor” to play cards, eat lunch, reminisce, and debate the issues of the day.

A family graveside service will be held on Monday, July 20.

Memorial contributions can be made to the VNA Hospice of NWI or Westchester Food Pantry.
