Roy Patrick Flaherty

 Roy Patrick Flaherty of Chesterton passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2016. He was 64. He was born February 22, 1952, in Lorain, Ohio, the son of Paul Patrick Flaherty and Eileen (McGlynn) Flaherty.
Roy is survived by his brothers and sisters Molly (Michael) Haas of Carmel, Ind., James of the Philippines, Mary Katherine Hamilton (Ron Pikula) of Chesterton, Paul (Janet) of Encino, Calif., Eileen (Gregory) Lee of East Waterboro, Maine, Marjorie (Thomas) Potter of Chesterton, best friend since childhood, Dick Collins and family; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Dan, sister-in-law Judy, and nephew, James McGlynn Haas.
Roy graduated from Chesterton High School in 1970. He was elected Class President his Junior and Senior years. Roy attended Indiana University and loved Bloomington. Roy's hobbies included working on old cars and shooting pool in a league with friends.
Roy had a gift for helping people. Roy’s early jobs included Peterson’s Pharmacy, Ericson’s gas station, and snowplow driver for the County. He continued helping others throughout his long career as a residential service repair technician at the phone company. His mother was often stopped in the grocery store by someone who was grateful to the kind phone guy, Roy.
Roy loved the holidays and special occasions. He always went out of his way to preserve family traditions and make holidays and parties special for family, friends, and his Ohio cousins. He enjoyed spending time with young nieces, nephews, and friends sharing his building and auto repair skills.
Roy was a history buff with a special interest in World War II. While visiting his brother Jim in the Philippines, he visited several historic sites from the war. Roy enjoyed spending winters in the tropical climate where he made many friends.
Roy gave generously of his time to the town he loved, serving on both the Chesterton Cemetery Board and the Park Board.
An Irish Wake will be held on Saturday, October 15th from 1:00-4:00pm at the Chesterton Moose Lodge. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chesterton Park Department.
