Roger A. Nelson, age 84, of Chesterton, IN, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2025. He was born on September 23, 1940, in Chicago, IL to Gunnar and Anna (Svenson) Nelson, both of whom preceded him in death.
On September 3, 1960, he married the love of his life, Eileen Nelson, who survives in Chesterton, IN.
He is also survived by his loving children: Jeffrey (Laura) Nelson of West Lafayette, IN, Wendy Nelson of Evanston, IL, and Leslie (George) Makovic of Western Springs, IL; his treasured grandchildren: Andy (Rachel) Nelson of Crestwood, KY, Greg (Emily) Nelson of Cincinnati, OH, Diane Makovic of Western Springs, IL, and Kelly Makovic of Western Springs, IL; two adoring great-grandchildren: Freya and Cosimo Nelson; and by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Ralph; his sister, Lorraine; and by his cousins he was raised with, Bert and Bob Bergstrom.
He graduated from the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy at the age of 20. Roger was a long-time pharmacist at Hook's and CVS in Chesterton and established the outpatient pharmacy at St. Anthony's hospital in Michigan City.
In retirement, he was able to pursue numerous hobbies including Lionel train layout and a garden railway; woodworking; travel; and spending time with his family. He was extremely proud of his Swedish roots and delved into Ancestry/genealogy with connections back to Ragnar Lothbrok, king of the Vikings! He longed for another Bears Super Bowl win, and really enjoyed college football and basketball (Boiler Up!). He loved his dog, Scooby, Swedish pancakes, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches!
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, March 7, 2025, at 12 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 2050 W 1100 N, Chesterton, IN, with Pastor Ruth Popkin officiating. The family will receive friends for a Memorial Visitation from 11 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
