Robert “Bob” Ton
August 27, 1956 – July 11, 2025
Robert “Bob” Ton, 68, of Porter, Indiana, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2025, surrounded by his family. Born in Valparaiso on August 27, 1956, Bob was a lifelong Chesterton/Porter resident and a quiet, steady presence in the lives of all who knew and loved him.
On May 22, 1976, Bob married the love of his life, Kathy. Together they built a beautiful life filled with music, laughter, faith, and family. He is survived by Kathy and their children: Brian (Christine) Ton, Kelly Peterson, and Robyn (Ben) Boche; and his cherished grandchildren Emma, Sophie, Maddie, Abby, Samuel, Jack, and Milo, who lovingly knew him as “Papa.” He is also survived by his brothers Greg Ton and Scott (Wynne) Ton, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold “Steve” Ton, Arlene, and Robert Carlson.
Bob’s love of music began early—he started playing the organ as a child and never stopped. Over the years, he played in many bands and traveled across the country and into Canada to perform. He was a gifted multi-instrumentalist, playing bass, drums, keyboards, and organ with heart and soul. He was a regular presence in local theater pit orchestras, and it was through music that he met Kathy. He and Kathy collaborated with lifelong friends Don (Sue) Anderson, Jim (Shirley) Alexander, and Mel (Barb) Figolah, to form the band, The United Sound.
For more than 40 years, Bob worked as an IT specialist for a menswear company, where his calm, reliable nature made him indispensable. He was also a devoted member of Augsburg Lutheran Church for 50 years, serving faithfully as treasurer for over 35 of those years.
Though his talents were many, Bob’s truest joy was his family. He was the best Papa and babysitter around—always up for a game of cards, a round of Beatles Rock Band, or simply being present. Gentle, witty, humble, and endlessly kind, Bob never needed the spotlight—he just quietly and lovingly showed up for the people who needed him.
He was deeply loved and will be missed more than words can say.
A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Augsburg Cemetery with Rev. Erik Bernth officiating.
Memorial donations may be given to Augsburg Evangelical Church, 100 N Mineral Springs Rd, Porter, IN 46304.
