Richard Raffin Obituary

Richard Louis Raffin, of Valparaiso, IN, passed away Thursday, October 31st, at age 91. Richard was born in Chicago, IL on November 12, 1932 to Albert Raffin and Jean (Murino) Raffin.

Richard married Bernadette Perona on June 19, 1954 in Spring Valley, IL. Married for 70 years, Richard and Bernadette raised 12 children passing on their faith and love of family to the next generations. Richard is survived by his beloved wife as well their children: Maria (Mike) Haley, Ann (Rich) Schuster, Paula (Tom) Appel, Albert (Patty) Raffin, Jean (Frank) Sangiorgio, Richard (Cecile) Raffin, James (Tina) Raffin, Margaret (Kevin) Mochen, Mary (Dennis) Oates, Michael (Brandy) Raffin, Bernadette (Thad) Whiting, and Theresa (Vince) DelMedico. He is also survived by 70 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren, his two sisters (Carole Raffin and Rae Panozzo), a sister-in-law (Joan Perona), a brother-in-law (Paul Perona) and many nieces and nephews. Richard was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend.

Upon receiving his bachelor degree in engineering from University of Illinois, Richard commissioned into the United States Army as an Engineer Officer and served for two years. After his time in the service, Richard had a long and distinguished career as a civil engineer. Stepping into the family business, Raffin Construction, he worked for over 60 years bringing his expertise to bear on countless projects within the greater Chicago area.

Richard enjoyed the outdoors. His garden was a favorite pastime throughout his life and brought him many happy hours. An avid fisherman, he enjoyed sharing this activity with his family. Richard loved to spend time with Bernie in Italy making friends in the small village of Salcedo. A man of integrity, generosity, humor, and common sense, Richard brought his Catholic faith into every aspect of his life no matter how small or large. This commitment was fostered by his long time membership in Opus Dei, an organization that was very dear to his heart. Richard’s example and loving care extended beyond his children and family to include a wider circle of friends, neighbors, and community members.
