Paul Jacob Sechrist, age 96 of Chesterton, Indiana, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on March 3, 2026. He was born on August 24, 1929, in Garrettsville, Ohio, to Jacob and Thelma (Rice) Sechrist, both of whom preceded him in death.
On May 7, 1955, in Norwalk, Ohio, he married the love of his life, Patricia Sechrist, who preceded him in death on January 16, 2026.
He is survived by his loving children: George Sechrist (Tammy) of Littleton, Colorado, Barbara Cavender (Lee) of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and Linda Bottom (Russ) of Lincoln, Illinois; his son-in-law, Mitch Haas of Fairfield, Iowa; his treasured grandchildren: Annie (Ross) Leavitt, Laura (Nathan) Seldomridge, Daniel Sechrist, David (Jessica) Sechrist, Sarah (Gideon) Nocero, Timothy Cavender, Hannah (Greg) Hansen, Matthew Cavender, Jasmine Bottom, and Chloe Bottom; and 12 adoring great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and his beloved wife, he was also preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Carol, in 2007, and by his brothers, Robert, Richard, and Thomas.
Paul was a Christ follower, and a devoted member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Paul was married to his lovely wife, Patricia, for 70 wonderful years, until her passing in January 2026. He was a good husband, provider, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He will forever be remembered for his witty sense of humor. He appreciated spending time with his family and friends, but also enjoyed solitary time.
Paul graduated in 1951 with a BA in chemistry at Hiram College, Hiram Ohio. He enjoyed his work as a Chemist, and was a member of Scientific and Professional Personnel, Chemical Corp.
He was a true Patriot. He proudly served his country in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War.
Paul was extremely handy. He liked to tinker and figure out how things worked. He was able to fix most things, like cars and household appliances.
Paul grew up on a farm, and he loved reminiscing about all the hard work he and his brothers fulfilled during that phase of life. He had a very large vegetable garden every year. Even just two years ago he was tilling the soil with a rototiller.
He enjoyed nature and God’s creation and loved all animals.
In his free time, Paul enjoyed exercising, boating, camping, playing tennis, bike riding, and reading.
He enjoyed volunteering his time as a Boy Scout leader, for the Salvation Army, and as a Vacation Bible School Director.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, March 13, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church of South Haven, 760 McCool Rd., Valparaiso, Indiana.
