Martha Smith Obituary

Martha Ann Smith, age 96, of Wheeler, IN, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 8th. 2024, at Life Care Center in Valparaiso, IN, around the time of the sunrise surrounded by the love of her family and generous staff. Martha was born in Breman, IN, on August 1st, 1928, to William and Madeline Edwards.

During her lifetime, Martha moved around a lot and lived in many various locations with her husband, James B. Smith, and their children, as her husband worked. After calling many places home, she and Jimmy settled in Chesterton, IN, where they raised their five children. Some of Martha’s favorite things to do was to spend time with her friends and family. She loved and cherished each and every visit with them and always had a hot meal ready for anyone who walked through her home. Martha also worked for Duneland Schools for forty years in the cafeteria and gave a loving smile each day to the children she served. Martha always faithfully went to church when she was able to and was truly a servant of the Lord. During the final years of her life, she resided with her daughter Faye and her husband John in Wheeler where she loved to look out at the traffic, watch westerns and Jimmy Swaggart, and speak with neighbors. Martha was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother. She will be dearly missed, but we are so thankful that she is at peace on the streets of heaven singing praises to her Father. She loved Jesus and had a fierce faith since she was a young woman that gave hope to all who met her. Martha’s prayers moved mountains.

She is preceded in death by her husband James, her parents William and Madeline, son William, infant daughter Lynn Ellen, granddaughter Elizabeth, daughter in-law Joyce, and her brother and sister in-law Clyde and Mary. Martha is survived by four of her children Leslie Miller, Faye (John) Barney, Craig Smith, and Robin (Alberto) Jimenez, eight grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She is dearly loved and will be missed so much.

Services will be held at White-Love Funeral Home in Chesterton, IN, on Saturday, November 16th, 2024. There will be a visitation from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m., followed by the service at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Chesterton Cemetery.

“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory no one can steal.” That is how Martha will be remembered, by how much she loved everyone she ever met.
