Marjory “Marj” Crawford Obituary

Marjory “Marj” Wood Crawford, age 88 of Chesterton, IN passed away peacefully on May 2, 2021.  She was born on May 30, 1932, in Chicago to John Curtis and Nancy (Farley) Wood, both of whom preceded her in death.
She is survived by her devoted children: Barbara Crawford of Chicago, IL, Sherroll (Lester) Raborn of Lake Dallas, TX, and James Crawford of Chesterton, IN; her grandchildren: Shawna Raborn, Robert Raborn, Tiffany (Tom) Bozovich, Rachel Crawford, and Nicole Crawford; her great-grandchildren: Lyla, Lucas, Emma, and Dylan; and by her siblings: Nancy Ahrens of Wisconsin and William Wood of Michigan. She was also preceded in death by her siblings: Shirley June Wood, Elizabeth Trimm, and David Wood.

Marj lived life fully and fearlessly, a gifted and prolific artist (painter and sculptor), a dedicated social and political activist, an intellectually engaged lifelong learner, a free spirit in every sense of the term, spiritually inquisitive but grounded in her Quaker roots.  Never one to shy away from controversy or expressing her opinion, she leaves an archive of Letters to the Editor on a wide range of topics.
Marj purchased the old town hall in downtown Chesterton thirty years ago and converted the space into what would become Coffee Creek Studios & Art Gallery.  Over the years, she provided the space as a venue for concerts, poetry readings, art exhibits and various community gatherings.
Over the course of her life, Marj dedicated time and effort to many social and environmental causes, including the National Organization for Women, Save the Dunes, the Izaak Walton League, Chesterton’s 4th Street Theater and Art Center, the Art Barn in Valparaiso, and the Porter County Arts Commission, among others.
A Celebration of Marj’s Active and Creative Life will be announced at a later date.
