Maria Ambrozaitis
Maria Ambrozaitis, 89, of Chesterton, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 15, 2021.
She is survived by her daughter Ramune “Muni” (John Fry), daughter Audrone “Audi”, granddaughter Lina, sister Aldona Brizgys, brothers Antanas and Juozas (Lile), numerous relatives and friends in America, Lithuania, and throughout the world.
Maria was born in Kybartai, Lithuania. She emigrated to the United States with her parents and three siblings after WWII, residing in Brooklyn, NY. In 1952, she married Dr. Kazys Ambrozaitis and they were together for 63 loving years until his death in 2015. They lived in New York, Kansas, West Germany, and Cleveland, Ohio before settling in Northwest Indiana more than six decades ago.
Maria studied art at Hunter College and at the Art Students League of New York, the Cleveland Institute of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. She was a lifelong learner at a collegiate level. Maria worked in a variety of media including oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, printmaking, and copper enameling. Most recently her favorite medium was photocollage, of which she said, “ My collages do not express reality. They reveal my subconscious. I rebuild the images on my own terms. It’s great doing things without being stereotyped…” She has participated in numerous art exhibits in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, California, Canada, and Lithuania.
Maria will be remembered as a loving, creative, kind, elegant and vivacious person. Her sense of style was impeccable. She will be dearly missed by all of those whose lives she touched.
