Laura was born in Chicago, Il in 1930 to Peter and Josephine (Poplauskis) Yoksas. She would often recall how when she was a child, she and her sister would look toward the steel mills watching the furnaces burn as the fire sparks looked like fireworks to them. Laura married Alvin Dale Johnson in 1950 and they had four children. Dana (Sherri) Johnson of Westville, Indiana, Nancy (George) Graves of Smyrna, Delaware, and is predeceased by her son Ted (Lucinda) Johnson in 2023 and her son Gregg Johnson in 1973. Laura has two grandchildren Graham Johnson and Shelbi Labadie and a great grandson Isaiah Labadie. As a graduate with her master’s degree in elementary education, Laura taught several different grades, but primarily taught the first grade in Lake Station, Indiana. After retiring, Laura moved to Smyrna, DE near her daughter and son-in-law. She enjoyed her retirement by reading, crafting, sewing, seeing shows, and traveling/cruising to New England, Canada and Alaska. As a retired schoolteacher, she enjoyed sitting on her porch with her daughter on Halloween as she was dressed in a different costume each year greeting young children. Holidays always included a competitive game of Scrabble with her daughter. Her favorite recent past time was riding through Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge enjoying all the wildlife and peacefulness.
Laura was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church in Smyrna, DE where she would regularly attend Bible study and was a member of the LWML (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League) Lydia’s Circle.
We will miss you mom and to quote a favorite song lyric…
“Spead your wings as you go
When God takes you back
He’ll say, “Hallelujah, you’re home”
She will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at her family's burial plot in Chesterton Cemetery in Chesterton, Indiana.
