LaRue Welkie Obituary

LaRue Ann Welkie (nee Schlene), passed away on April 10, 2024 in Altamonte Springs, FL. She was born on April 1, 1948 in Michigan City, IN to Carl Henry Schlene Sr. and Mildred Mary Schlene (Wolford), both of whom preceded her in death.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Dawn Marie Welkie; her treasured grandson, Nicholas Robin Welkie (partner, Priyanka Satpati); her brother, Eric Jon Schlene (wife, Vickie); her sister-in-law, Deborah Schlene; nieces, Kimberly Schlene, and Rachel Schlene; and nephews, Martin Schlene (wife, Rachel) of New Castle, IN and Henry Schlene of Lafayette, IN.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother, Carl “Bub” Henry Schlene Jr.

LaRue was a life-long member of the Lutheran church, and she loved her church family at St. Paul’s in Chesterton.  LaRue’s true calling was teaching and was a proud public-school teacher.  She loved her students as well as the Duneland School Corporation. She took pride in watching the accomplishments of her students and enjoyed supporting them in their endeavors, whether music, arts or sports. She was a die-hard Chicago Cubs and Purdue Boilermakers fan, and was blessed to see her Cubs win a World Series and her Boilermakers go to a National Championship game.
