Kerry Johnston Obituary

Kerry Ann Klein-Johnston, 62, passed peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on October 17, 2024, after an 11-month fight against colon cancer. Kerry was born in Gary, Indiana to Kenneth and Karen (Bartz) Klein who preceded her in death. Kerry grew up in Miller and Hobart, Indiana. In 1987, a single mother at the time, she moved her two oldest daughters to Chesterton and continued to expand her family there.

Kerry was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt and is survived by her husband Phillip Neiswinger, her children Heather (Greg Olson) Klein Olson, Jordynn (Jody) Klein (Bruce Fieffer), Scott Neiswinger, Robert (Amber) Neiswinger, Jacob (TIffany) Johnston, Kelsey Neiswinger (Brandon Kirk), brother Kevin (Sherry) Klein, sister Kristyn Klein, brother- and sister-in-laws Kim Piercy (Von Crocker) and Dwayne (Gina) Neiswinger, grandchildren Emily, Kylee, Jordan, Lexi, Cameron, Nevaeh, Evan, Cooper, Matthew, Ella, and Noelle, special nephew Chris Klein and niece Karen Klein, her chocolate labrador Zoey, her cat Oliver, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family who adored her.

Kerry dedicated 44 years of her life to raising her children and caring for her grandchildren. She took great pride in her cooking, baking, and sewing, and was known for her expertly made soups, stews, Christmas cookies, and handmade theater and Halloween costumes. She loved following pop culture and politics, was a strong supporter of women’s rights, treasured music from the 60s, 70s, and 80s, and enjoyed movies of every genre and crime-related television shows. She was a friend to all and treated every friend of her children and grandchildren as if they were her own. Her home was a sanctuary of support and understanding, where everyone was welcomed and encouraged to be their authentic selves. Kerry’s humor, wisdom, and unwavering support will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A celebration of Kerry’s life will be held on Saturday, October 26 at White Love Funeral Home in Chesterton. Family will welcome guests from 2-4 p.m., with a funeral service beginning promptly at 4 p.m. Following the service, please join the family for a potluck style dinner at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 2050 W. 1100 North, in Chesterton.
