James Leonard Obituary

James Robert Leonard, age 70 of Chesterton, IN passed away on August 8, 2022. He was born on August 11, 1951 in Philadelphia, PA. His parents, Jerry and Joan Sottung, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his loving children: Michael (Heather) Solomon of Levittown, PA, Whitney Leonard of Chesterton, IN, and Nicholas Leonard of Chesterton, IN; his grandchildren: Emily and Hayden Solomon of Levittown, PA and Meadow Norman of Chesterton, IN; his sister, Sandra (Ken)  Borochaner of Levittown, PA; and by his nieces and nephews: Justin Spence, Daniel Spence, Jacob Borochaner, and Sarah Borochaner.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Karen Leonard; his sister and brother-in-law, Bernice (Charlie) Spence; and by his niece, Gerriane Sottung Spence.

Jim was a proud Vietnam Veteran, having deployed at age 18. He served from 1970 to 1972. He was an NCO in the 2nd Flight Platoon. He was considered a central figure who kept the men together and kept them effectively operating as a combat unit. When there was a problem, you would hear someone say, "Where's Airborne?" Jim always had the solution.  He had the greatest respect of everyone! He was Airborne, Infantry, Pathfinder, Door gunner, Crew Chief, and did multiple tours in Vietnam. When he finally got back to the States, he was only 21.

He lived in Bristol, Levittown, and Morrisville, all areas of Bucks County in Pennsylvania. He worked at US Steel in Fairless Hills, PA until being transferred to the Gary plant. He lived in Chesterton for over 30 years. Jim was always up to share one of the unbelievable stories of his life. He was also a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Private family services will be held at a later date with burial with military honors.
