James Douglas Fike, age 80 of Chesterton, IN, passed away on July 13, 2024. He was born on February 8, 1944 to Dewey George and Iva (Frazee) Fike, both of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by his better half, Connie Nervik; He was a devoted father to his children: Rachel (Les) Fischer of Porter, IN, Jason Fike of Alabama, and Matthew Fike of Chesterton, IN; proud grandpa of his grandchildren: Owen, Emma, Kyle, and Megan; dear brother to his sister, Connie (John) Eisentrout of Oakland, MD; and cherished uncle of many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his siblings Oma, Armeda, Bill, Retha, Ross, Charles, and Arthur. Rest in peace to all.
Born in McKeesport, PA, Jim joined the Navy in the Service tradition of his family, training as an electrician. Four years later, he began working for Bethlehem Steel and called Northwest Indiana home thereafter.
He will forever be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor. He treasured his visits to family and friends from “back east” where he grew up, and the company of so many family and friends in Indiana. James was a member of the Chesterton Moose Lodge. He was also a member of many bowling and golfing leagues winning one Championship for each. He loved reading and crossword puzzles, coffee and buckwheat cakes, and the newest gadgets to share with visitors always being welcomed into his home.
Jim’s superpower was his generosity with all he encountered, especially the children in his company. He was often caught sneaking them candy before dinner and padding their pockets with change and dollar bills.
