Gregory Martinson Obituary

Gregory Ron Martinson, age 71 of Chesterton, Indiana, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, May 1, 2026 surrounded by his family.

He was born in Valparaiso, IN on April 24, 1955 to Ronald and Joanne (Walk) Martinson. He is survived by his mother Joanne; wife Bridget (Lauerman) of 40 years and two sons; Justin (Emily Wilt) of Chesterton and Austin Martinson of Elkhart, Indiana; granddaughter Lucia; sister Gretchen (Tom) Anderson of Chesterton; and his beloved Uncle Denny (Susan) Martinson of Michigan City.

A fifth generation lifetime Duneland resident, Greg graduated from Chesterton High School in 1973, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural mechanization from Purdue University in 1979 and went on to earn his associate’s degree in mechanical engineering technology from Purdue Calumet in 1985 where he met the love of his life, Bridget. He and Bridget loved to do nearly everything together from grocery shopping to travel and gardening. Greg grew up with the family business, Martinson Custom Cabinetry in Porter, IN, which began when he was born in 1955 and where he also worked as a cabinetmaker for 28 years. He later joined Duneland School Corporation as a groundskeeper in 2013, caring for the school and community he loved.

Whether at work or play, Greg never met a stranger. He was a quick and clever conversationalist who loved a good joke. He enjoyed walking the beach and picking up beach glass, cruisin’ in his black ‘52 Chevy truck, mowing the lawn, being in nature, and caring for his garden. Greg also greatly enjoyed traveling to Colorado and Florida, tracking gas and oil prices, and shopping ‘til he nearly dropped. What Greg loved most, though, was his family: being a son, a brother, a husband, a father, and a grandfather.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026 from 3-6 p.m. at the Chesterton Moose Lodge, 602 Broadway, Chesterton. Donations can be made to VNA Hospice of Northwest Indiana.
