Fernetta “Fred” Dummel (nee Robinson), 67, of Plainfield, Indiana, passed away on April 6, 2026. Fred was born on May 12, 1958, to Nettie and Billy Robinson in Vincennes. Her family relocated to Chesterton where she spent most of her years, with a stint in Rochester, Minnesota before ultimately settling in Plainfield. After graduating from Portage High School in 1976, she went on to dedicate her life to the service of others through her work with Ammcorp Records Management, Town Centre Senior Living, Miller’s Merry Manor, and as a Mary Kay Ambassador.
Fred is preceded in death by her parents, Billy and Nettie Robinson; her son, Robert “Bobby” Keefe; her sister, Sheila Lemmons; and her beloved furbaby, Fluffy. She is survived by her devoted husband of 31 years, Dave Dummel; her precious children, Angela Keefe, Jennifer (Jim) Wilson, Samantha (Tyler) Miller, and Danielle Dummel; and her cherished grandchildren, Keelie Jo, Isaiah, Kinnick, Charleston, and Kai, along with several nephews, nieces and great-grandchildren.
Fred was known to all as an incredibly generous soul who found joy in caring for the people she loved. With a welcoming heart, she embraced her roles as a loving wife to Dave and a nurturing mother and grandmother to her beautifully blended family. She carried her treasured titles - wife, mom, bonus mom, LaLa Fred, grandma, great-grandmother, daughter, aunt, baby sister, and friend - with immense pride.
True to herself, Fred loved spending time with the people who meant the most to her. She was the “Hostess with the Mostest,” delighting friends and family with her exceptional cooking and baking skills. She was deeply moved by the beauty of nature and found her true calling in tending to her stunning flower gardens. Her gardening talents were never complete without her bird feeders. Fred always made sure her “little birdies” were fed, often accompanied by her familiar request: “Can we stop at the Chesterton Feed & Garden really quick?”
Fred also embraced her inner “Mad Scientist,” creating natural soaps and lotions that were sure to soothe any skin woes. She enjoyed trips to the casino with Dave and friends, where it was never a surprise when Fred turned out to be the “lucky winner.” She also spent many days playing her favorite card games with friends and family, and was pretty good at it, too. She will be remembered as someone who made everyone feel at home in her presence. She was always ready with a listening ear, thoughtful advice, answers to life’s tough questions, and unwavering support at a moment’s notice.
Fred will live on in memory as a wonderful wife, mother, LaLa, grandma, aunt, sister, and friend and she will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held on April 13, 2026, at White-Love Funeral Home, located at 525 S 2nd St., Chesterton, IN. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., immediately followed by the service. Burial will take place at Chesterton Cemetery.
