Eva Gene Hopkins, age 80 of Chesterton, IN, passed away on June 6, 2023. She was born on October 23, 1942 in Valparaiso, IN to Eugene and Evelyn (Shupe) Bruhn, both of whom preceded her in death.
On July 13, 1963, she married the love of her life, Hugh Hopkins, who survives in Chesterton, IN. She is also survived by her sons, Mark (Michele) Hopkins of Chesterton, IN and Christopher (Kristi Harter) of Chesterton, IN; her seven grandchildren: Ryan, Emily, Steven, Justin, Jacob, Christian, and Liam; her great-grandchildren: Shay, Thea, Iris, Aela, and Oliver; her brother, Daniel Bruhn; and by her many cousins.
In high school, Eva achieved the fastest speed in shorthand, and after graduation she became the secretary for Quaker Qats Company and Temp Secretarial Service.
She later became the secretary for the Shirley Heinze land trust. She went on many nature walks and studied wild flowers and became an expert in identifying them and compiling a notebook of her pictures.
Eva was the chief researcher for the Westchester Township History Museum. She compiled notebooks of research on almost every aspect of life in the Chesterton area including churches, businesses, fire and police departments, historic buildings, early and prominent citizens, and much more. She did a lot of family genealogy research for many people.
She was a member of the Duneland Historical Society, where she participated in programs on local history. She was active on the Find A Grave website and she added nearly 8,000 memorials. She was also a board member of the Sons of Norway.
Eva perfected her hobbies, and especially loved knitting and sewing. In addition to her hobbies, she was also a book keeper for Hopkins Ace Hardware and Hopkins Small engines. Yet, she was the most humble person and never bragged about her accomplishments.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 12, 2023 at 1 p.m. at White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S 2nd St, Chesterton, IN. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Chesterton Cemetery.
