Elizabeth "Betty" Bennett Obituary

Betty Bennett Passes Away at 76

Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Bennett, of Liberty Township and Porter, died Thursday, June 18, 2020 at her home.   She was 76.

Betty was born August 4, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Levi George Summers and Martha (Butler) Summers, who preceded her in death.

In 1965 in Chesterton, Betty married the love of her life, George R. Bennett Jr. of Dune Acres, who preceded her in death.

Betty is survived by two loving daughters, Mary Elizabeth Bennett of Chesterton and Catherine Bennett Colín of Porter; as well as a very dear son-in-law, José Manuel Colín Morales.

The oldest of three children, Betty grew up in Chesterton and was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Chesterton, and later St. Paul Lutheran Church in Michigan City, Indiana.  She graduated from Chesterton High School in 1961 and then attended Purdue University Extension in Michigan City.  Betty began working for the Insurance Exchange in Chicago and a friend told her about two nice young men, George and Lynn Bennett, who had a carpool she could join. She quickly fell in love with the handsome brown eyes gazing back at her in the rear-view mirror.  A short courtship later and Betty and George were married.

George was a private pilot, and Betty learned to be a top-notch navigator.  They enjoyed endless air-trips for many years.  They also shared a love of trains, history and camping: all of which made for many memorable family trips with the girls.

Betty was an active member of Al-Anon since 1974.  She owed the success of her marriage, serenity and happiness to the 12 Step Program that she and George shared together until his death in 2002.  Betty went on to continue working her program which benefited not only her, but countless others. Thank you, Betty.

In recent years, Betty found yet another group of friends at Sunrise Restaurant in Chesterton. She appreciated the conversation, friendship and most of all the laughter the staff and “regulars” would share on sometimes daily basis.

With concerns about Covid-19 and ongoing quarantine, no service will be held at this time.  The family plans to schedule a Celebration of Life in the near future and hopes friends and family will be able to attend.

Professional arrangements are entrusted to the White-Love Funeral Home, Chesterton, IN.  Memories may be shared at: www.whitelovefuneralhome.com.
