Edna "Elzene" Gladys (Charlson) Johnson

Edna Gladys Elzene Johnson, “Elzene,” age 107 of Porter, IN, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2020.  She was born on January 26, 1913 in Baileytown, IN to Oscar and Ada Charlson, both of whom preceded her in death.  

On May 6, 1939 at Augsburg Evangelical Lutheran Church, she married the love of her life, Fred Johnson, who preceded her in death. 

She is survived by her loving nieces and nephews: Carolyn Lenburg of Portage, IN, Robert (Patti) Bergren of Chesterton, IN, Wynelle (Glen) Waldo  of Texas, Leolyn (Bruce) Koger of Arizona, and Ed (Marie) Weigand of Valparaiso, IN; her many great nieces and nephews; and by her many great-great nieces and nephews. 

She was also preceded in death by her brother, Lawrence Charlson; her sisters: Viola Peterson, Luella Albrecht, Hazel Barido, and Millnet Hoover; and by her nephew, Richard Barido. 

Elzene was a proud Swede; a faithful lifelong member of Augsburg church holding many church positions; a diehard Cub fan; Worthy Matron in the Eastern Stars; and a care giver to many!  Aunt Zenie was an integral part of our family. While babysitting the kids she played football and baseball with them even in her mid eighties; she  knit mittens, scarves, and afghans; was the best Swedish cook, ( pies, rice pudding,  rye bread etc.); a seamstress, pianist, -you name it and she did it and always with a smile! She was with us for every holiday, birthday party, and family gathering and always led us in the Swedish table prayer. There's a big empty place in our hearts, but it's filled with sweet memories! We love you bunches and we were blessed by your love for 107 years!!

A Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday, March 25, 2020 at 11 a.m. at Augsburg Cemetery, Porter, IN, with Rev. Erik Bernth officiating.
