Long-time Chesterton resident Dena Lewis passes at 86

Dena Lewis, 86 of Chesterton, IN passed away on Monday, February 27, 2023 at the VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso, IN.

She was born June 30, 1936 in Midland, PA to Charles and Virginia (Mumford) Whittacre. She married Harry S. Lewis on December 26, 1953 who preceded her in death in 2011.

Dena is survived by her children, Kari (Jim) Murray, Bill (Karen) Lewis, Pete (Deb) Lewis and Maggie (Ross) Lewis McKenna; grandchildren Kevin Murray, Nick (Stephanie) Lewis, January (Doug) Ley, Ariel Lewis (Corey Milbert), Brittany (Ralf) Semler, Elyse (Nathan) Geiger, Colin (Daniel Eliot) Hammar, and Cassi (Shanon Moore) Hammar, and great-grandchildren, Conleigh, Lennox and Warner Murray, Jameson and Cooper Murray, Alex, Chase, Cameron and Keira Lewis, Taylor and Danica Ley, Rory, Raelin and Matthias Semler, Coraline and Charlie Geiger and nephew Eric (Pam) Whittacre.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother; brothers and sisters-in-law Frank (Melba) Whittacre and Charles (Betty) Whittacre and grandchildren Cole Murray and Scott Lewis.

Dena was a former member of the Association of Artists and Craftsmen of Porter County.

Dena was a Turtle and she was a founding member of the Duneland Ding-A-Lings. She was never one to sit out at a party or miss the opportunity to have a good time. She said she looked best on a bar stool in heels with a drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other. She lived a life that most would be envious of. Dena loved being a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She was a Domestic Goddess and was proud of the fact that she went back to finish her high school degree graduating from Chesterton High School in 1968. We are all better people for having known her!

Per Dena’s wishes, no services will be held. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
