David W. Hoenke age 90 of Chesterton, passed away on August 31, 2018 at his home. He was born on November 8, 1927 in Chicago, IL, to Arnold and Ruth Hoenke, both of whom preceded him in death.
David met the love of his life while camping with friends at the Indiana State Park. Barbara Neelands became his wife on June 7, 1952. They both had strong feeling for the dunes. Later they purchased a cottage on Johnson Beach, this was where they created many pleasant memories.
David is survived by Barbara and his children: Tracy McDonald of Chesterton, Kim Hoenke Cassler of Chesterton, and Mark Hoenke ( Kimberly Krill ) of Chesterton: and by his grandchildren: Caleb McDonald, Zach McDonald, Courtney (A.J) Udvare, Matt Cassler, Steven Hoenke and Christopher Hoenke.
He is also preceded in death by his brother, Arnold Hoenke.
David was a Purdue University graduate, and was employed by US Steel as a Civil Engineer for many years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Chesterton. David had a passion for standard gauge trains, he built his own track and numerous train cars in meticulous detail. He also enjoyed restoring classic Mercedes Benz cars.
He had a great affection for cats, after the passing of his pet cat Gypsy, he would visit the local pet stores just to visit the cats.
There will be no services.
