Charles Edward Swickard

       Charles Edward Swickard, age 92 of Valparaiso, IN, passed away suddenly on September 16, 2020. He was born on August 16, 1928 in Scotland, IL to Everett and Gladys Swickard, both of whom preceded him in death.

       On October 18, 1950, he married the love of his life, Lillian Swickard, who preceded him in death in 2018.

       He is survived by his loving children: Darrell (Sheliah) Swickard of Chesterton, IN, Rodney (Jennifer) Swickard of Valparaiso, IN, Cindy (Tom) Corzan of Chesterton, IN, Tammie (Kerry) Fero of Porter, IN, and Terry (Caren) Swickard of Valparaiso, IN; his twenty-two grandchildren; and by his twenty-five great-grandchildren. 

       He was also preceded in death by his brother, Everett Swickard. 

       Charles proudly served his country in the United States Army and was a Korean war veteran. He was an active member of St. John’s United Church of Christ. Charles retired from Bethlehem Steel and was incredibly active in his community.  He was a volunteer at the Duneland Resale Shop and devoted 19 years of his life serving the Duneland community. While serving the Boy Scouts of America, he earned one of the highest awards granted by the Boy Scouts, the Silver Beaver award. He was also a member of the Duneland Woodcarvers, Hoosier Cruisers, and the American Legion Post 94.

His favorite hobbies were camping, bonfires, and fishing.

       Funeral Services will be held on Monday, September 21, 2020 at 12 p.m. at St. John’s United Church, 225 W. Lincoln Ave., Chesterton, IN with Reverend Aaron Ban officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church. Burial will follow at Chesterton Cemetery. Per Governor Holcomb’s order, face coverings are required at all services.

       Memorial donations may be given to St. John Community Dinner.
