Caroline E. (Fischer) Byrnes

       Caroline Elizabeth Byrnes of Chesterton, IN, passed away on January 30, 2025.  She was born on March 9, 1935, in Fountain Hill, PA to Carl and Elizabeth (Tunner) Fischer, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Paul A. Byrnes Jr. on March 17, 2011; her beloved son, Paul A. Byrnes III; and by her siblings Marguerite M. Fink, Carl J. Fischer, and Joseph N. Fischer.

       Early in her life, Caroline worked for Bethlehem Steel as an elevator operator, guiding visitors through the headquarters on 3rd Street in Bethlehem, PA. She went on to work as dental assistant for Dr. Richard Heffner, DDS in Bethlehem. Caroline married Paul Byrnes in 1958. Together, they had six children before the family moved to Chesterton in 1969.

       She is survived by her children: Ann Byrnes of Valparaiso, IN, Mary (Mitt) Denney of Greenwood, IN, Thomas (Kathy) Byrnes of Chesterton, IN, Patricia Byrnes of Hood River, OR, and Denise (Nick) Gregurich of Valparaiso, IN; her 18 treasured grandchildren; and her 9 adoring great-grandchildren. 

       Caroline had a generous heart and was always reaching out to connect with others. She cared for everyone she met and made many long-lasting relationships. Her mission of love was taking care of her family, especially her grandchildren. Caroline will be remembered as a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.

       Caroline and her husband Paul enjoyed spending time at the lake cottage with family and friends. Caroline truly loved nature and expressed this through her breathtaking and flourishing gardens.  She found joy guiding loved ones through garden walks, while identifying each flower and herb with admiration.

       Caroline will forever be remembered for her great, big hugs.

       A private graveside service will be held by the family at Chesterton Cemetery.
