Bonnie Shaffer Obituary

       Bonnie K. Shaffer, age 77 of Valparaiso, IN, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2022 at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on May 15, 1944 in Gary, IN to John P. and Mary Jane (Anderson) Curran, both of whom preceded her in death.

       She is survived by her loving children: Mary Lynn (late David) Eggers of Valparaiso, IN, Harry E. (Julie) Mendoza Jr. of Valparaiso, IN, John P. (Rhonda) Mendoza of Westville, IN, Christopher B. (Ann) Mendoza of Portage, IN, and Kathleen Huerta of Valparaiso, IN; her grandchildren: Tasha, Christopher, Tabitha, Amanda, Ashley, Myles, Nicholas, Sarah, Mackenzie, Matthew, Alexandra, Ava Marie, and Judah; her great-grandchildren: Brooklyn, Nora, Samuel, Finn, and A.J.; and by her siblings: John Patrick (Joyce) Curran of Oregon, Tom Curran of Gary, IN, Jerry (Lydia) Curran of Portage, IN, Tim Curran, Debra Mersino of Logansport, IN,  and Robert Curran of Logansport, IN; and by her many nieces and nephews. 

       In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, George E. Shaffer; her sister, Sandra Heater; and by her brother in-law, Terry Sullivan.

       Bonnie was a faithful member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Chesterton. She loved her family with all her heart, and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. Bonnie was active in the Blue Army and Rosary Sodality at Nativity Church in Portage. She was a self-taught carpenter and loved interior decorating. She would often be found bargain hunting at Goodwill.  She loved adventures and was always on the go. Watching sunsets on Portage lakefront was one of her favorite things to do. 

       A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 638 N Calumet Rd, Chesterton, with Father Kevin Huber officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Portage.

       The family will receive friends on Friday, January 7, 2022 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S 2nd St., Chesterton, IN.  Masks are strongly recommended inside the funeral home. 

       Memorial donations in honor of Bonnie may be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
