John Daniel Heslin, age 89 of Chesterton, IN, passed away on February 13, 2024. He was born on September 12, 1934, in East Chicago, IN to John Joseph and Florence (McKenna) Heslin, both of whom preceded him in death.
He is survived by his loving children, Mark (Deanna) Heslin of Chesterton, IN and Patricia (Chris) Trotta of St. Charles, IL; his grandchildren: Rebekah (Kyle) Johnson, Kaitlynn Heslin, Sarah (Zach) Clark, Megan Heslin (Austin Farmer), Jacob Heslin (Rachel Fredenburg), and Isabella Trotta; his great-grandchildren: Stella, Isa, Reid, and Jayden; and by his sister-in-law, Betty Paulsen.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Margaret (Briggen) Heslin; his beloved daughter, Sharon Peterson; his son-in-law, Alvy Peterson; and by his sisters: Rosemary, May, and Faye.
John proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Michigan City.
He, along with his wife and son, were the proud co-owners of Hadj Cycling and Fitness in Whiting and Southlake Cycling and Fitness in Merrillville.
He was a Fourth Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the American Legion, Kiwanis, Elks, E.C., V.P. American Federation of Teachers, and was a Building Union Rep at George Rogers Clark High School, in Hammond Indiana.
John worked at Clark High School from 1961 to 1988 where he made an impact on many students' lives. He also taught driver's education classes in the summer. After retiring from teaching, John worked for the Department of Natural Resources. His favorite places to work were Bailly Homestead and Chellberg Farm. John also loved riding his bike and as he grew older, he continued to ride his stationary bike each day.
