Thomas M. Mills, age 77 of Michigan City, IN, passed away suddenly on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana.  He was born on September 23, 1941 in East Chicago, Indiana to Lyle W. and Zella B. (Maddox) Mills.  He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Deanne Gribling and brother-in-law Jon Gribling.

On August 28, 2018, he married the love of his life, Sharon Back-Mills, who survives in Michigan City, IN. 

He is also survived by his loving children: Susan (Richard) Haire of Porter, IN, Randy (Kathy) Mills of Westville, IN, Kristy (Gregory) Scott of LaPorte, IN, Marcella Mills of Colorado Springs, CO, Shannon (Lou) Grounds of Westville, IN, and Ryan (Dawn) Mills, of Westville, IN; his grandchildren: Ethan, Austin, and Caleb Haire, Carrie and Mitchell Mills, Mackenzie, Madelyn and Gavin Scott, Jesse Mills, Nathaniel, Christopher, Benjamin and Samantha Mills, Andrew, Kristen, Jared, Samantha, Adalin, and Reagan Morris; and great-grandsons Theodore Haire and Andrew Morris Jr.  Further by his loving step-children: Roger (Brandi) Morris of Portage, IN, Jerry (Tara) Morris of Edison, TN, and Justin Kage Morris of Michigan City, IN; and by his life-long best friends, Larry and Paula Spurlock of Portage, IN.

Tom grew up in Gary, Indiana, then moved to Portage, Indiana. He proudly owned Mills Automotive in Portage, IN which he started in 1969 and owned/operated through 1995. Although retired, he continued to work, doing what he loved, for Craig Jones at CAMs in Chesterton. He coached baseball with his sons and softball with his daughters for many years through Liberty Recreation. He loved fishing with his family and best friend Larry Spurlock. He also loved spending time with his family whether it was family dinners or his family showing up on Sundays. In his later years he spent a lot of his time with his grandchildren taking them to the beach, to work with him, or teaching them about the cars he worked on. Most of all he loved building and racing stock cars. Tom had a big heart and was always there to help. He was loved by all is children, step-children, grand-children and will be missed.

A Memorial service will be scheduled for a later date.

So sorry to hear of Tom's passing. I got to know him while working at LakeShore Ford. He was such a nice guy. Always friendly. I'm sure he will be greatly missed by alot of people. My prayers to all the family and friends of Tom
