Joseph William Gersna, age 77 of Chesterton, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. 

He was born on March 26, 1942 in Washington, Pennsylvania, to Steven and Anna Chorba Gersna, both of whom preceded him in death.

On November 26, 1960, he married Sandra Kay Gersna, who survives in Chesterton.

He is also survived by his daughter, Janice (Robert) Schrader; his son, Joseph (Lisa) Gersna; four grandchildren: Joseph Gersna, Michelle (Nicholas) Ruff, Kelly Gersna, and Robert Schrader; his sister, Margaret Valencik; sisters-in-law, Betty (Doug) Combs and Kathy Lindley; brother-in-law, Harry “Butch” (Diane) Hootman; and by his many nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his brother, Steven Gersna; his sisters, Mary Zemba and Dorothy (Steven) Vensko; and sister-in-law, Ina Mae Miller.

He graduated from Ellsworth High School in Pennsylvania in 1960. He retired from U.S. Steelworks in 1994, where he worked as a millwright for 33 years.  After retirement, he and his wife went on to invest in real estate.  He was especially fond of restoring older properties.He had a very strong work ethic, and he always made sure to take care of his family.  He was a dedicated fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers, never abandoning his love for his home city. 

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, April 12, 2019 at 12 p.m. at White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S 2nd St., Chesterton, IN, with Father Nathaniel Edquist officiating.  The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.  Burial will follow at Saint Patrick Catholic Cemetery, Chesterton, IN.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be given to Dunes Hospice, 4711 Evans Ave, Valparaiso, IN 46383, for being there for the family when they needed them the most.
