Music by The Piano Brothers

Raymond J. Carnes, age 98 of Chesterton, Indiana, passed away on December 1, 2018 at Rittenhouse Village of Michigan City. He is survived by his loving daughter, Sharon Carnes, of Michigan City. He is also survived by his son-in-law Laurence Silvestri, and nephews: Richard, Edward, Russel and William Walen; Bradley and Barry Warble, and nieces Roxanne Warble and Terry Coleman. He is preceded in death by his wife, Frances, and his brother, William.

During WWII, Ray “kept ‘em flying” serving in the Army Air Corps as an Airplane Mechanic Instructor. Upon his return, he worked as an Instrument Technician at Western Electric in Cicero, IL and retired with 28 years of service.

He organized a group of homeowners and fought for fair treatment during the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore land acquisition. He was a long time Chesterton community advocate where he spearheaded efforts to bring Lake Michigan water to the town and raised funds for safety equipment for the Chesterton Fire and Police Department. Ray loved to reminisce about the summers he spent on Beaver Island Michigan, working on his uncle’s fish boat.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at 11 a.m. at White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S 2nd St., Chesterton, IN. Burial will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
