Music by The Piano Brothers

William Philo Read, 52, who grew up in Chesterton and lived most recently in Hammond, passed away on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, from a sudden illness.

He was born December 22, 1965, in Chicago, the youngest son of long-time Indiana Dunes activists Herbert and Charlotte Read, whose Dunes preservation efforts he supported.

Bill is survived by his parents; brothers John (and Sherrill), David (and Karen), Jim (and Pia) and sister Suzy Hodge (and Brian); as well as nieces and nephews Jacquelyne, Jonathon, Samantha, Allison, David, James, Jordana, Jessica, and Jennifer; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Bill loved to tell and listen to stories at family gatherings. He was one of the funniest men on the planet. Family members remember his impish smile and open-hearted laugh.

He worked for Catholic Charities in Chicago, helping young people who had spent their childhood in foster care transition to independent lives as adults. He loved the young people he worked with and took joy in their accomplishments.

His wide range of interests included vintage cars, steam locomotives, prairie architecture, antique clocks, watches, magazines, and lamps, film photography, and restoring old houses. He saw the beauty in objects that most of the world had forgotten, just as he saw the promise in young people whom others had cast away.

He loved his dogs. He loved hiking in the Indiana Dunes. Above all he loved his family.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.

To the Read Family, I am devastated to hear of Bill's passing. I haven't seen Bill since I moved from the US in 2000, but he was a dear friend of mine at Purdue. We lived in Kneale house together, and I met you all on several occasions when we drove home together. Please know he is, and will be, fondly remember.
