David “Dave” Ochoa, age 77 of Chesterton, passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at the VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso, IN. He was born on March 2, 1939 in East Chicago, IN to Salvador and Aracelia Ochoa, both of whom preceded him in death.

Dave is survived by his wife, Joanne Miller Ochoa, who survives in Chesterton; his children: Marya Shoemaker of Chesterton, Kristin (Jeff) Whitfield of Chesterton, and Nathan (Tracey) Ochoa of Jackson Township; and by his seven grandchildren: Drew Shoemaker, Trevor Shoemaker, Conner Whitfield, Chad Whitfield, Cathryn (Matt) Hampton, Haley Ochoa, and Hayden Ochoa.

He is also preceded in death by his brother, Salvador Ochoa Jr.
Dave proudly served our country as a Navy Corpsman with the Marines. He was a school teacher for twenty-seven years and a counselor for twelve years in the Portage Township School System. He was also a member of Saint Patrick Catholic Church and the American Legion Post 170. He enjoyed reading, playing chess, and tutoring his grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at White-Love Funeral Home, 525 South Second Street, Chesterton, Indiana. The funeral will be private at Dave’s request. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Westchester Neighbors Food Pantry, 801 Broadway, Chesterton, IN 46304.

My deepest condolences to your family. Mr. Ochoa was my 8th grade teacher at Aylesworth Jr High school. I have to say he was a favorite of mine. This was around 1971. I've never forgotten him. May he rest in peace.

I have know Mr. Ochoa for many years, and while I was in High School and the opportunity to function as a teaching assistant through the Future Teachers and Leadership Programs at Portage High School. Prayers of peace to his family. He is one teacher I always remembered and enjoyed. Not just because he was a good teacher,but he was a patient and kind soul,and always with a smile. May you know how special he was to others.🕊️🕊️🕊️
